Samsung Electronics Co., the world’s second largest handset maker, said Friday that it released its first open source-based mobile phone exclusively for a British mobile carrier.
Samsung Electronics said its new touchscreen device based on the LiMo platform will be available for subscribers to a new service called “Vodafone 360,” which is provided by the world’s largest mobile telecommunications network company Vodafone Inc.
The LiMo platform is an operating system and software development platform for mobile devices, developed by the LiMo Foundation, reported Yonhap news agency on Friday.
The foundation is a consortium of mobile industry leaders working together to deliver a free and open software source for use by the whole mobile industry, based on the Linux computer operating system.
“As a Founder Member of the LiMo Foundation, we have been highly involved in driving the platform forward and are truly delighted that Samsung has delivered the first R2 LiMo handset,” said Shin Jong-kyun, executive vice president and head of the mobile communications division at Samsung Electronics.
LiMo R2, or Release 2, refers to the latest version of the original LiMo, Samsung officials explained.
