Does anyone use a Wi-Fi enabled Phone without a carrier?

Your Name    12/31/2009

So, I'm trying to reach my health insurance guy to change the policy and I can't make a long distance call. Skype is not working well with my Mac (Well, Skype is making it hard for me to purchase new time. It's my skype phone that doesn't get on well with the Mac). My stupid prepaid mobile phone never has service unless I turn it on and wait for four hours.
So I begin dreaming of those big clunky Wi-Fi phones that I used to see online.
But aren't newer mobile phones equipped with Wi-Fi so that you can switch back and forth?
What if I could use a Wi-Fi phone with my home network and never sign up with a telecom carrier? !
This would solve the No Service problem. I'd have service as long as I have Internet/Wi-Fi, and that's steady.
I don't make long distance calls from the street. Hell, I don't even make local calls from my mobile phone. It's just for emergencies.
I wouldn't have any bill beyond the initial cost of the phone.

As long as your getting a fairly decent phone it should be Wifi enabled.

What exactly do you mean switch back and forth? between what?
if your phone has Wifi, you should connect to the local Wifi service and there is a good chance it will be 3g enabled meaning you can connect directly to the phone server internet and use speeds of up to 5mb per second.
So you will be able to switch between that and wifi, i currently use the 3G connection and im also using a pay as you go contract with my Viewty, and then just buy the unlimited web browsing feature with At&T which is currently 20bucks for the whole month.

I see what you want to do and i think its possible to do that.
you would buy a unlocked sim phone and then you would either just need to turn it on and you may need to have a sim card in the phone just for it to kind of log in, but the sim does not need to be activated.
once the phone is on, you will be able to use the features of the phone, ie, Camera, Wifi, blue tooth, mp3 player ect.
Lg and samsung have a few nice ones which i would be looking at.
but im sure what your attempting is possible and iv actually tried to do the same thing using a bluetooth port before Wifi was on phones and you could use a bluetooth gateway.
Depending on the software you want to use i suppose, iv never tried the Java version.
maybe a windows smart phone would be the best for you as i know they have lots of software.
