Getting Your Cell Phone Provider to Replace Your Battery
Cell phone batteries go bad. They drop charge, they fail to take charge or they drain too quickly. Cell phone battery degradation is an inevitability in the long run – but sometimes, your cell battery begins underperforming long before it should. If you’re within the 30 day return period, you should be able to get a free battery with no questions asked.
However, if the battery (or phone) is truly faulty, Verizon (or AT&T, or T-Mobile, Nextel, Sprint or whatever phone company you have) should replace it for free as well. The trick is proving that it’s a hardware issue and not something else.
The easiest way to do this is to swap out the battery. You can do this by bringing your phone down to the store and asking them to switch out a good battery to see if it still drops charge or drains quickly. You can also try this by swapping your battery with a friend with an identical phone.
Chances are, the tech will also ask you to try a few different settings on your phone before granting you a replacement. For example, they might ask you to switch your phone to airplane mode, turn off Bluetooth, 3G, WiFi, update the operating system or perform a factory reset. These features can drain a phone battery very quickly – particularly if you are in an area with low or no coverage. That’s because your cell phone will waste all its battery life searching for signal or hopping from one tower to the next. Asking you to turn these features on your phone off and wait is standard procedure – and unless you want to wait around awkwardly in the store with the tech guy for half an hour or more, you should do these yourself beforehand.
It’s also important to note that some smartphones – especially Android phones and other phones with multitasking (such as the LG eXpo) can sometimes have their batteries drained by poorly coded apps running in the background. If you suspect this is the issue, you may want to try an app such as AppKiller.
If you’re absolutely sure that the battery is faulty, go ahead and bring it in or call tech support and request a RMA. Most of the time, your cell phone plan provider will ship you a new battery and ask you to return your old unit after you receive it. Make sure you do this – otherwise they might bill you for the new battery.
