This is some real lazy reporting. Actually having read this bill, it is clearly not saying you will get a ticket for “holding a cell phone”.
Anyone under 18 may not use a cell phone whether it’s hands free or not. But the bill clearly exempts anyone who is “…activating or deactivating the mobile
communication device or a function of the device”.
So doing anything on your phone except for calling and texting is still perfectly fine if that’s what you take from the bill.
Also exempt is anyone in an emergency, with a disability, or if you use your “communication device” for your job.
So does that mean business calls are exempt too? It’s really not clear how it’s worded.
My problem with all the cell phone laws is the fact that it doesn’t address the other issues of distracted driving. I can’t answer a call but the woman next to me can apply eye make-up while doing 70?
good people just dont know how to text and drive or answer there phone soon as that phone comes up to there ear there kneck stops working
Oregon joins other states to ban cell phones while driving
On January 1st 2010 it will be illegal to talk, text or dial in the state of Oregon. Unlike the ban in neighboring Washington State, it is not considered a secondary offense in Oregon. A hands free device is required. Police can pull you over if they see you on the phone or texting. It is a primary offense like California, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and D.C. A few other states have bans in place while driving in school zones (see link below). The fine is $142.00 in Oregon. Personally, I am all for it. Especially the texting portion of the law. It’s simply too dangerous in my opinion
